Every Monday at Modthink begins the same way. We sit down, coffee in hand, ready to tackle the upcoming week. We discuss tasks that need to be completed, projects that are being worked on, and our schedule of upcoming meetings (we like to call this Modthink Momentz).
However, before we dive into what needs to be accomplished in the upcoming week, we take a few minutes to discuss our weekends and share a high point and a low point. This is our rose and thorn time!
If you didn’t know, Brent, our CEO, is also a Boy Scout leader. His sons are actively involved with their troops and Brent really enjoys being a part of it as well. After an activity, the scouts sit down and share their rose and thorn from the day. This is a way to share your feelings with the troop and review the day!
Brent brought the idea of roses and thorns to Modthink a few months ago, and we love what it has added to our company culture. We always share the highs and lows of our weekends, which creates genuine interest in what our colleagues have going on.
For example, this week, almost all of our thorns were the Hogs loss to Texas A&M (disappointing right?). But when we started sharing our roses, we got to talk about how Steve’s daughter placed 3rd out of 250 runners at her cross country meet (go Grace!), about how Taylor went to Dallas for the game, and how Brent went on a hike with his sons to Devil’s Den.
Talking about our families, friends, and personal lives has created a culture at Modthink that we think is pretty special. We’ve become friends not just at work, but outside of the office as well. Sharing our roses and thorns is a way for all of us to connect in a more personal way.
We love getting to hear about the latest happenings in each others’ lives and have made it a Monday morning staple. Sometimes we’ll even share our buds, or things that are coming up that we’re looking forward to!
If we’re being honest, we think everybody should do this. Whether it’s with your entire company, within your small team, or with your family after a fun activity, it’s good to reflect on the roses and thorns.
We’ve heard some pretty funny, interesting, strange, and crazy stories since starting to share about our weekends. We always end up laughing about something, and it really has contributed to building a culture of friendship and connectivity.
Check out these fun changes we’ve made with Modthink that we’re excited to bring in with the new year!
