Holiday Traditions from the Homes of Modthink
Mackennzie Dutton, Junior Account Executive
We celebrate Christmas in my house, and we celebrate it big! My mom goes all out with decorating, baking, shopping, etc. It’s always a really special time in my home and there are a lot of traditions we follow every year. We make toffee, Russian tea cakes, and chocolate covered pretzels.
To this day, my favorite tradition growing up was our tree skirt that goes at the bottom of our Christmas tree. My mom has a giant tree skirt that she’s been putting mine and my sister’s handprints on since we were babies. Every year, she’d paint our hands (mine were gold, my sister’s were red) and we’d leave a handprint on the tree skirt. Then, she’d paint the year in our palms. You can see our tiny hands growing up every year at Christmas time. We even put our childhood dog’s paw print on it the year before he passed away, so we’d have Christmas memories with him too! It’s really special to get the tree skirt out every year and see how my sister and I grew up together.
Chris Hauer, Business Development Manager
The way we celebrate in the Hauer household is one of a kind. The days leading up to Christmas is all about my grandparents’ kitchen. If you’re not helping, then you’re in the way. You can smell the turkey, mac and cheese, stuffing, and cake all the way down the cove.
We usually don’t need to put up a tree because there’s a 65% chance that the tree is already up from the previous year. When it comes to Christmas lights on the house, It’s usually me and my older brother David on the roof hanging things up in the freezing cold, trying our best not to slip and fall off.
Then we all wake up Christmas morning to watch the Macy’s parade in our pj’s and We watch it so long we end up debating on when to head over to my grandparent’s house because we don’t want to miss any part of the show. We head over, finishing watching the parade then begin to devour the delicious food.
Piper Gullickson, Junior Account Executive
In my home, we are big fans of Elf on the Shelf. When we were little, this was a fun tradition for my three siblings and I to run around the house and find where the Elf would move everyday. We also have tons of baking traditions in our home like making green wreaths, peanut blossoms, muddy buddies, pumpkin pies and egg bake casserole on Christmas morning!
When it comes to decorations, my mom goes ALL OUT. This woman turns our house into a Christmas wonderland from the day after Halloween to the first day of february. It’s Christmas for about 3 months here in the Gullickson household. Last but not least, we take our pictures with Santa every single year. It looks funny as we grow older and my six foot younger brother is sitting on Santa’s lap, but these make for the best memories to see how much we have grown.
Brent Robinson, Chief Thought Officer
In our home, we celebrate with themed Christmas cards every year. We have chosen a lot of different themes over time and always get funny reactions from family and friends. A new tradition we have started in our home is blessing bags. Our family creates bags with everyday necessities to hand out to people in need. We love giving back to our community and passing out the bags filled with things like food, deodorant, a tooth brush, socks and water. This has been a fun new tradition in our home and brings us back to the reason for the season.
This time of the year is incredibly joyful with friends and family. We hope everyone has safe travels and makes lasting memories with their loved ones. From the team at Modthink, we wish everyone a happy holidays and a happy new year!
